Prologue

Crimson swirls circled the shower drain. She wondered What on earth? Where is that coming from? Then she caught a glimpse of a scarlet streak straight up her shin. A razor cut so perfect, she had not felt its pain until after she was aware of the injury. Funny. She said aloud.

And so it goes with love as well. For one can have a broken heart and not really notice anything more than the occasional feeling that something is just not right. Not feeling the pain until one defining moment which causes love not to be blind any longer. The final straw that brings everything into focus and the ugliness of love hits you square in the jaw. Your heart can be breaking slowly with you completely unaware of what is about to happen, oblivious to the fact that your world as you know it will disintegrate with the simple words I dont. I dont love you anymore.

This is how Claire Bradleys day began. An accidental cut in the shower and her naivety circling the drain, about to be washed away by the man she loved.

He turned over and stretched. Looking at the clock, he thought of Claire. 7AM, she would be in the shower about now. He would call to check on her later. No doubt she had probably cut herself shaving or had some other minor mishap. Small accidents always seem to happen to her, but rest assured she always recovered gracefully. That was Claire. He chuckled quietly at the thought of her morning misadventure. She probably wouldnt even notice the cut until after she had pulled on her pants, staining them with blood. She would then be late for work after having to find something else to wear. Yes, he would call her later to hear the details and to laugh with her over her rotten luck and how the new outfit made her look slimmer anyway. The eternal optimist was Claire and he smiled again at the thought of her.

Will you tell her today? a soft voice broke through the silence, as a hand brushed his hair from his face. I didnt realize you were awake. He said. She kissed his neck, nuzzled in close and replied I thought I heard you laugh. Mmm he nodded, I will. I'll call Claire later. But for now, I must go. And with that he was up and out the door to begin his day like he had so many times before, with a lie and a kiss goodbye.
